There are so many online dating apps and websites to choose from these days. In 2022 alone, over 366 million people used an online dating service. While you’re probably familiar with the likes of Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge, you might not have heard of Happn before.
Happn is fast becoming one of the biggest dating apps on the market. It can connect users who cross paths with each other when they’re out and about. While the app is free, you can also opt for a paid premium version to access additional features.

What is Happn?
Happn is a location-based dating app that shows you profiles based on who you’ve met or been near recently. With over 100 million users, there are plenty of opportunities for you to find a match! The app is free, but you can pay for a premium membership to access the advanced features.
The app originated in France in 2014 but is now available in more than 40 countries and 15 languages. So whether you’re visiting family in your hometown or vacationing abroad with friends, you can use the app wherever you go.
Let’s take a look at how Happn works, how you can find matches, and the various memberships to choose from.
How does Happn work?
When you cross paths with a fellow Happn user (within 250 meters), their profile will appear on your app in real time. If you like what you see, you can give their profile a Like or send them a SuperCrush. Don’t worry if you’re not interested: you can hide the profile by tapping the X button on your screen.
A Like is a secret action. You’ll only know if another user has Liked your profile if you’ve also Liked their profile. However, a SuperCrush sends the other user a notification and it’s up to them whether they respond or ignore it. The best way for someone to notice your profile is to send a SuperCrush, but a Like can also be effective if you’re a bit shy about shooting your shot.
If you and another user mutually Like each other’s profile or accept a SuperCrush, your profiles will match. At this point, you can begin messaging each other and see where it goes from there.
Unlike some other dating apps, Happn doesn’t show your location to other users. They’ll only see the geolocation where you both cross paths, such as at a shopping centre, at the cinema, or even walking your dog in the park.
The app will list users you’ve been near recently (in chronological order) and the amount of time you’ve been near each other. It won’t give the exact distance or time of the event, though.
Another cool quirk of Happn is the ‘ready to meet feature’. Everyone knows it can be awkward trying to work out the best time to ask someone on a date. They might say no, which can kill the conversation. On the flip side, it can be uncomfortable if you feel pressured by someone asking you out too soon. Luckily, Happn lets you pick when you’re ready to meet. The app will let you know when the other person has said they’re ready to meet, too.
To prevent awkward or unwanted meetings while you are at work or out and about, Happn also has an ‘Invisible’ feature, which prevents you from showing up in other users’ Timelines for eight hours. When Invisible Mode is on, the people you cross paths with won’t appear on your Timeline either. However, you can still interact with people you’ve already crossed paths with and exchange messages with your Crushes.
Is Happn free?
Yes, the Happn dating app is free to download from the App Store or Google Play Store. You can see other users, Like them, and send them a SuperCrush with a free account. If you match with another profile, you can also send and receive messages with the app’s free version. However, it’s worth remembering that a basic gives you limited Likes. Once you’ve used your Like allowance, you’ll have to wait until the next day for it to refresh.
You can also play CrushTime, which is a game on the app. When you’re sent the notification for CrushTime, you’re sent a four-square grid. You have to guess which profile has Liked you. The first guess is free; if you want to play again, you have to send a SuperCrush to see which profile has Liked you. Whichever profiles you select will be sent a Like by default.
Happn paid subscription
Happn also offers a premium subscription service, which gives you additional features. A one-month Happn Premium subscription costs €34.99 in-app, a six-month subscription costs €59.99, and a 12-month subscription costs €94.99.
With Happn Premium, you can see who’s Liked your profile, even if you haven’t matched with them. You can also send up to 10 ‘FlashNotes’ a day to users you haven’t matched with yet. A FlashNote lets you contact another user before you match. They can either respond with a Crush or a refusal. Other Premium features include double the number of CrushTime games and an ad-free experience.

Is it cheaper to pay for a Happn subscription on the web?
The cost to sign up for a Happn subscription depends on whether you’re signing up using an iOS or Android device or via the web.
If you are in the EU, you can buy a Happn subscription on the web, but the cheapest way to subscribe is via an Android device. Note that in the UK, you cannot buy a Happn subscription on the web.

It is not possible to purchase the SuperCrush and Boost features on the web, but you can buy them on iOS and Android devices. Here are the prices*:

Why pay for a Happn subscription?
You don’t have to sign up for a premium subscription to find a match on Happn. However, the premium features will improve your experience, and you may find matches quicker. Below are some of the advantages of paying for a Happn Premium subscription.
Happn Premium perks
There are lots of reasons to pay for a Happn Premium membership, as listed below:

- No adverts
- See who’s liked your profile
- Scheduled invisible mode
- Rewinds (return to someone’s profile you skipped over)
- Up to five video calls per hour
- Double CrushTime
- Hide some personal info (e.g. age and distance)
- Filter searches with specific criteria (e.g. height, individuals looking for a relationship)
Whenever you tap on a button that leads you to a paying section, the app will use a pop-up to suggest you pay for a Happn subscription. For example, you might try to access the list of users who have Liked your profile, which is a Premium feature. You can choose whether you want to pay for a single month’s subscription or opt for a six-month or 12-month subscription. The six and 12-month Happn Premium cost less per month than if you choose the monthly subscription.
Payment methods for Happn
Happn lets you pay for a Premium subscription or purchase a SuperCrush via the accepted payment methods listed below.
iTunes
You can make Happn purchases via your iTunes account. Subsequent subscription costs will be deducted 24 hours before the end of your current subscription. Your subscription will automatically renew at the end of the billing period unless you cancel it. You can disable the auto-renewal via your iTunes account settings.
Google Play Store
You can pay for your Happn account via the Google Play store. The app store will let you select a credit or debit card already linked to your account to pay for your subscription. You can also change which card is charged for future payments.
Credit and debit card
Although you can only pay for the Happn app via iTunes or the Google Play store, you can pay for the web version using a credit or debit card. Go to your profile and select the Premium subscription. You’ll then be prompted to choose the one-month, six-month, or 12-month subscription. Next, you’ll be asked to enter your card details; you may have to confirm the purchase with your card company.
PayPal
PayPal is an accepted payment method for the Happn app in some countries, but not all. You can confirm whether it’s accepted in your country by visiting the subscription page on Happn and see if it’s listed as an accepted method.
Prepaid card
You can link a prepaid card to your iTunes or Google Play account, which can then be used to pay for your Happn subscription. Alternatively, you can use your prepaid card to pay for the web version.
Our prepaid cards are an easy way to control your membership. They aren’t directly linked to your bank account, so the payment won’t appear on your bank statement. This also means there’s no way cybercriminals can access your bank account if your Happn account is compromised. If you want to ensure your subscription is cancelled at the end of a billing cycle, you can make sure you’ve got insufficient funds on your card. Happn won’t be able to charge your card, so your subscription will be automatically cancelled.
